There’ll Be Swingin’, Swayin’, (Cardboard) Records Playin’
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007There’ll Be Swingin’, Swayin’, (Cardboard) Records Playin’:
“The Internet Museum Of Flexi/Cardboard/Oddity Records. ‘Once bound by cereal boxes, held in the pages of a magazine, wrapped up in envelopes sent through our postal system or given away casually with some product, these bits of paper and plastic yearned to be set free to fulfill their destiny as playable records.’ Also, The Flexi Manufacturing Process.“

Flexidisks were quite cool, I must say.

Brad For Sale
Monday, February 19th, 2007It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Brad Sucks, the one man band with at least one fan, tho he says otherwise. Brad has always given away his album and demos for free, even going so far as encouraging fans to remix his songs. One fan even created his own video for “Fixing My Brain.”
Brad is now giving fans the option to purchase his music DRM free off of his Web site. You can still download his music for free, but you can purchase higher-quality DRM-free music if you so wish by visiting http://www.bradsucks.net/dd/. If you’re hot and heavy in favor of DRM, you can also get the album off of iTunes.
Ian Astbury Closes a Door
Monday, February 19th, 2007
Back when he was in The Cult, Ian Astubury was notorious for being a fan of Jim Morrison, almost to the point of obsession. He even used his love of all things Morrison during his band’s Behind the Music special on American cable channel Vh1 where he said that during the heyday of The Cult he would have preferred to have had serious discussions, like what Jim would eat for breakfast. It was no surprise when The Doors asked Ian to join the band (minus John Densmore, who sued and had them use a different name) they now called Riders On the Storm. Ian, who did everything he could to be the crawling king snake, was the perfect choice to front the iconic band.
Turns out that The Cult are getting back together, and now, after four years of working with Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger, Ian’s leaving the band. Jim Morrison Redux has left the building.
Check out this freaky picture of RotS… Ian really has gone hardcore with his Jimbo love. He looks like a younger version of an older Jim that never was if you cock your head a bit and squint a lot.
I Walked With a Zombie
Monday, February 19th, 2007BrooklynVegan has a cool post about Roky Erickson, the original LSD burnout (well, assuming my calculations are correct… it’s prolly the late Sid Barrett). Roky, a native of Austin, is set to do some live gigs this year. BV also links to some classic 13th Floor Elevators, solo and cover work.
I loved the 13FE, but they did this sound effect thing that was supposed to bring listeners outside of their music (or some such), which really ruined (IMHO) their classic blues-rock. You can hear it in their great “You’re Gonna Miss Me” mp3 linked to on the BV site.
Other site news: I fixed the notifications so that I’ll now know when I have comments to approve. Even if it’s Auz killjoying me making fun of Drew Barrymore’s MUSE typo =P
Muse Timewarped
Sunday, February 18th, 2007Ah, celebrities. Gotta love em, such fonts of knowledge them. Take Drew Barrymore for instance. According to her celebrity playlist on iTunes, she love MUSE’s “Starlight” off their Black Holes and Revelations LP. So much so, that “this whole album was always playing in ‘96 for [her].” Ya know, I think BHR is one of the most brilliant albums that came out last year, but I never suspected that it would have such a long history! Thanks, Drew, for giving me the real scoop about this great album!
Mraz Does Ugly
Sunday, February 18th, 2007Jason Mraz this week released a new song and video in honor of American Television show Ugly Betty. You can purchase the track on iTunes, or get it for free with a season pass of the show. You can view the video for it on his official Web site.
Tony Wilson = Cancer = Important Joy Division Collaborator? What?
Sunday, February 18th, 2007There was once a time when Tony Wilson used to be just the head of Factory Records, maybe even a former television personality. What moron at NME decided to link him as a Joy Division “collaborator“?
Strange But True: Iron Maiden and Eddie to Hit India’s Shores
Sunday, February 18th, 2007NME reports that heavy metal band Iron Maiden will play a concert in India for the first time. March 17 will be the date of their concert at Bangalore’s Palace. “Their album ‘A Matter Of Life And Death’ rose to Number Two in the Indian charts, which is the highest ever chart position in India for any rock act.” I’ve never been a big IM fan (but my brother Jason is), but it just seems… weird.
