Editors @ Webster Hall 30 Mar 2006

Just came back from seeing the Editors at Webster Hall with The Big Sleep as openers.
Big Sleep were rather good, very jam band music that I was very easily able to groove to. The vocals seemed superfluous to the music, as is evidenced by how they did most of their set without actually singing. I picked up their EP showcasing three tracks from their upcoming LP, “Son of the Tiger.” Listening to it now, may play a track on the next SecretCast. [looks like I’m the first to submit the EP into CDDB]
Editors were really great. Music dead on, although there was little deviation to what they pressed. The audience was weird, talking throughout. I moved a couple of times before I gave up and just dealt with the conversations. It took them a while (the audience) to get into the music. Lead singer Tom Smith seems to be either: suffering from epilepsy, a tweaker, or a devotee of St. Ian with his constant jerks and choppy hand gestures. Believe me, there’s nothing wrong with any of the above, just an observation I made while I was wondering if he’s ever admitted to having a death shrine to our Heavenly Mancunian… I suspect he does.
When introducing “Bullets,” Smith dedicated the tune to either Rolling Stone or The Rolling Stones and called them (or it) assholes. I suspect it’s the magazine based on this tepid review of their album Back Room (remember, it just came out here in the US). If anyone (read: Auz) knows what’s up, let me know.
The encore included two new tracks, but I didn’t think to note what they were. Hopefully Brooklyn Vegan made it to the show and will have some pics up and a list, or will link to a site that has that info.
Oh, I don’t want to forget this. I was a little late getting to the theatre, but so were the Editors, who had just pulled up front and were quickly putting their gear inside. Turns out that they had just finished filming tonight’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien show. I found out just as I was making my way home, so I was able to turn on the tv, flip it to channel 4, and watch the band I just saw live perform before I saw them.
Good live act. Americans are boring.
